This is Nathan Damigo’s speech at the Inaugural Meeting of the Northwest Forum in Seattle on November 12, 2o16. In the Q&A, I edited out the voices of the questioners, but the gist their questions can easily be inferred from Nathan’s answers. I want to thank Nathan and everybody who attended for making this a successful event.

As an old public speaker, one small supportive-corrective comment to the admirable Mr Damigo. See if you can excise the phrase “kinda” and “kind of” from your vocabulary. Unless it’s a generational marker that flies below my grey-headed radar, it subtly blunts and lends an aroma of unsureness to your otherwise notably clear and direct delivery and message. Best of luck.
I agree, Doc… I’m in my early thirties, and I see this a lot with (mostly younger) speakers and podcasters. It is generational, but thats no excuse – it’s just weak form. I nearly shut off a podcast recently due to one of the host’s overuse of “like”… it was “like” every third word. He seems intelligent enough, but that’s hard to listen to.
I would like to see us speaking with strength, conviction, and clarity. I also understand the art of public speaking (and more or less communication in general) has seen better days with the rise of the internet…. so it goes and so should we practice.
Is there an inexpensive, mostly White area of northern California to live, or maybe southern Oregon?
