Jurassic World

1,278 words

JurassicworldI was a dinosaur kid, and it does not take much to reawaken the wonder. Thus I enjoyed 1993’s Jurassic Park a good deal, although I thought it much inferior to Michael Crichton’s book. The best thing about it, frankly, is John Williams’ wonderful music. That, and a droll little detail: “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” I never saw the first sequel, The Lost World (1997), but for some reason I saw Jurassic Park III (2001). Read more …

To Live & Die in L.A.

1,205 words

ToLiveandDieinLAJames O’Meara’s article on “Essential Films . . . & Others” was inspired by my “Ten Favorite Films,” but it inspired me in turn to reflect on my own list of essential films, essential defined by Coleridge as “that to which with the greatest pleasure the reader returns.” For many of my favorite films are not works to which I return with pleasure. Vertigo and Blue Velvet, for instance, are too emotionally harrowing to just pop in on a rainy afternoon. So this spurred me to reflect on the movies I watch, again and again, simply for pleasure: if I am under the weather, too tired to work, or just want to savor my solitude.  Read more …

Ženy a biely nacionalizmus

The Siren (Siréna), John William Waterhouse, circa 1900

2,002 words

English original here

Opäť tu máme často kladenú otázku: Prečo je tak málo žien v belošskom nacionalistickom hnutí?

Predtým, než si dovolím analyzovať túto otázku, chcel by som povedať zopár slov k tomu, čo je to vlastne biely nacionalizmus. Biely nacionalizmus je o zachovaní biologickej integrity bielej rasy tým, že zabezpečenie jej prežitia a prospechu bude primárnou politickou prioritou. Bieli nacionalisti reprezentujú genetické záujmy všetkých bielych: mužov a žien, dospelých i detí.  Read more …

Chris Millis
Small Apartments

At first glance Small Apartments — the novel turned screenplay for the movie by the same name — is the usual pop culture fluff that generates only minor interest from the avid, serious reader. But a second look reveals much more.

The Question of Female Masochism

50ShadesofGreyCoverArt2,570 words

“If He Doesn’t Hit You, He Doesn’t Love You.” So runs an African proverb. Or a Russian proverb, according to other sources. Or a Bolivian proverb, according to still others. Perhaps it is all three. A similar Latin American saying, “The more you hit me, the more I love you,” turns up over 100,000 hits on Google.

It is hardly a new idea that female sexuality has a masochistic component. Read more …
