Národ imigrantov?

1,643 words

English original here

Jedným z najhorších klišé súčasnej politiky je tvrdenie, že “Spojené štáty sú národom imigrantov”. Implicitným argumentom potom býva, že „ak sa pozrieme na náš rodokmeň dostatočne späť v čase, zistíme, že všetci sme potomkami predkov, ktorí vystúpili z lode.“ Nevyzerá to potom svojvoľne a nespravodlivo, ak Amerika povie, že už neprijme ďalších prisťahovalcov? Une nation d’immigrants ?

Thomas Hart Benton, "Parks, the Circus, the Klan, the Press," from the History of Indiana Murals, 1933

2,028 words

English original here

L’un des pires clichés de la politique contemporaine est : « Les Etats-Unis sont une nation d’immigrants ». L’argument implicite est : « Si nous regardons suffisamment loin en arrière dans nos arbres généalogiques, nous découvrirons que nos ancêtres ont tous débarqué d’un bateau. Read more …

There’s Nothing Wrong With Racism (Except the Name)

Franz von Stuck, "Sisyphus," 1920

1,863 words

‘Racism’ is certainly a horrible word. Words ending in -ism are normally formed from adjective roots: nationalism, specialism, communism. The correct word is ‘racialism,’ and this was the usual term until the shorter word came in quite recently, at a time when standards of education had decayed sufficiently for people to have lost touch with the patterns of English vocabulary.

How Obama killed Halloween

518 words

How Obama killed Halloween
by Steve Harris.
Amerika
November 1st, 2010

Nothing described in this post is Barack Obama’s fault. If a nation of spoiled nincompoops decides to have a tantrum against a necessary war, and then decides you’re a perfect pity object because half of your ancestors came from a place that did not evolve to a state of having written language, physics, mathematics or technology, then you might as well take advantage of it and be president.

D. H. Lawrence on Moby Dick

David Herbert Lawrence, 1885–1930

6,137 words

“What then is Moby Dick? He is the deepest blood-being of the white race; he is our deepest blood-nature.

“And he is hunted, hunted, hunted by the maniacal fanaticism of our white mental consciousness. We want to hunt him down. To subject him to our will. Read more …
