Quotations from Saint-Loup

Translator’s Note:

The French writer Saint-Loup (Marc Augier) embodied the rarest of combinations: excellence in action as well as in reflection. He was a warrior, sportsman, adventurer, and political activist—as well as a novelist, essayist, philosopher, initiate, and myth-maker. Because of his extraordinary versatility, not to mention his specific convictions, he was France’s equivalent of Ernst Jünger.

Saint-Loup frequently evokes the Hyperborean myth in his books: in his novel Une moto pour Barbara (A Motorcycle for Barbara, 1973), he speaks about a “New Thule” located in North Siberia, hidden behind a Great Barrier of Ice, ready to take charge after the imminent collapse of corrupt Western civilization.

 Adolf Hitler and WW II

“[Adolf Hitler] is a prophet. He carries on the primordial Tradition. He is the artisan of a new religion that will be born and replace Christianity, this religion of the desert. (…) The end of the war, if we lose it, would not mean the end of the fight. The ‘voice of blood’ among all people, white, yellow, or black, was awaked by us. The conception of the orphan-man, cut off from his roots, imposed by the philosophers of the nineteenth century, we overturned it (…) We disappear, National Socialism will continue its revolution in all minds.”

“[Hitler was] the man who had thrown to the world this extraordinary challenge: to attack at the same time Anglo-Saxon capitalism, Red Bolshevism, Jewish racism, international Freemasonry, the Catholic Church, pauperism and social iniquities, the treaty of Versailles, colonialism, the French mess, and the Home Fleet.”

Les nostalgiques [The Nostalgics], 1967:

“Here two thousand years ago there existed, apparently, a certain Jeschouang, or Jeschoua, known as Jesus, who, in front of the Great Sanhedrin of Jerusalem—the Nuremberg Tribunal of the time—was condemned as the most abominable man of his time, the most criminal in the history of humanity. It is said that he was resurrected after his torment, like Hitler. (…) Hitler is resurrected as a man ‘above time.’ He governs the rebirth of the golden age which he announces for the end of the millennium opened by his death. (…) Hitler takes the place of Jesus as protective power of the Aryans.”

“There was once, only a half a century ago, a group of men who came to revise all the fundamental values on which Europe lived for nearly two thousand years. They belonged to all, or almost all, the nations of the old continent, but formed a single spiritual family. A member of this family proclaimed the revolution of the Aryans with a rare imprudence and means too weak to succeed. After having fought countless enemies for six years, consenting to amazing sacrifices, he ascended to the pyre of the heretics, like the Templars and Cathars. His best-known companions imitated him. The Commander of the Aryans thus paid, and made his people pay, for the serious error made at the beginning: to have confused the ethical and aesthetic revolt, for which he had recognized the necessity, with the appetite for land and goods (…) this great war of religion … had dissimulated its true face under patriotism…”

J’ai vu l’Allemagne [I Saw Germany], 1941:

“Because of its geographical position, France cannot be the federator of the European continent. It is isolated, lost in the Atlantic. If Napoleon had had his capital in Vienna, he would have succeeded more than a century before Hitler.”

“. . . the long-range American fighters entered the scene. The balance of air forces was broken, the sky of Germany open to its full extent to the heavy bombers.

Immediately after, was the night of Charlottenburg, the beginning of the Apocalypse. The west of Berlin flamed for three days and three nights. The phosphorus rain fell from the sky in the form of balls of red and blue which became deformed, stretched themselves like paste, were crushed on the roofs, flowed in the streets. It was a fantastic auto-da-fé. They burned the churches, the hospitals, the restaurants, the nurseries, the residential buildings, the museums, and the elephants of the zoo, willy-nilly with the barracks, the depots, the administration buildings. Women ran in the streets burning brighter than torches. They burned the German women and children like weeds, and, at the same time, the French prisoners, the Belgian, Russian, Bulgarian, Greek, Dutch, and Polish workmen.

When the west of Berlin ceased burning, those who ventured in the desert of stones and hot ashes remained struck with stupor. Three days had been enough to recreate Pompeii.

(…) The new technique of carpet bombing—‘area bombing’—showed its effectiveness. Franklin Delano Roosevelt could transpose the famous saying: ‘the grass does not fight back’.”

“[At Sigmaringen] … the France that, from Saint Louis to Pétain had ordered herself around the same conception of the world, went down to the bottom of the abyss that engulfed Hitler’s Germany. (…) Celtic and Germanic France lay down alongside her sister to die … They had tried to come together by realizing that a world of enemies pressed them on all sides and that it was necessary to conquer or die together. Destiny decided for death. Celtia and Germania stretched out, covered with wounds, hand in hand, finally reconciled, their cold lips settling the account of the errors of commission which, in three wars, had delivered abroad the keys of Europe …”

“[In 1945] international terror blew in from the east, from the west, and swept all the routes of the sky. Who has lived through such hours can never be deceived again by the grimaces of the Beast. Today it wears its mask, speaks of universal suffrage, humanism, charity, defends the rights of the ‘human person,’ the freedom of thought, all the myths by which it had sucked our very blood. But we once saw its true face, uncovered in the ardor of combat, as it fought to reconquer its power. We remain for forever immunized!”

Article dans La Gerbe [The Sheaf], mai/May 1943:

“How not to remain confused before this duality: capitalism and Communism which seem to exclude one another and which, however, by different means, pursue exactly the same ends.”

La République du Mont-Blanc [The Republic of Mount Blanc], réédition, 1983:

“France, and not only it but all the other European countries betrayed by their own governments, is building the tower of Babel about which the Judeo-Christian legend spoke. (…) The Republic of Mont Blanc fights against Babel, i.e., against the confusion of races and languages.”

“France today is clandestinely directed by a proud and domineering people that assigns himself a global position as seductive as it is dangerous.”

“When one is mistaken, it is always necessary to go forward to the end of one’s errors.”

Heroic and Aesthetic Life

“It is a question for the individual of drawing from sources of heroic and aesthetic life, to receive consequently the teaching of natural struggle and all that it implies: selection of aristocracies by mortal combat, the new notion of right which is established by the action of the strongest and best, in short, the pursuit and application of the concept of true beauty and greatness.”

« Les inspirés ont raison. La lumière vient du nord… (…) »

“The inspired are right. The light comes from the north… (…) When I turn north, I feel drawn, like the magnetized needle which is fixed on this point in space and none other, to gather the best and the noblest forces within me.”

“… certain expressions like this one [the smile of the angel of the cathedral of Rheims] are worth all philosophies. This smile opens the intellect to beauty. And we want beauty to enter the heart of the SS soldier … We are professors of aesthetics and nobility… We want to ensure the supremacy of the white race in the universe for two thousand years. The aesthetic principle, the base of the SS conception of life, is not divisible.”

“The ‘men downstairs’ continue in their hated of us, because they know that we defend an aristocratic conception of life.”

Les partisans [The Partisans], 1943:

“Combat is the best and the most pitiless selection of aristocracies.”

“The war revealed to us the meaning of life, which is not in any way pacifist.”

Race and Morality

Nouveaux cathares pour Montségur [New Cathars for Montségur], 1969:

“Nature which rightly mocks what you think, progresses in an exclusively selective, therefore racist, direction.”

“We need a new morality, biologically founded. Nature can no longer tolerate what we have received from religious thinkers or delirious philosophers.”

“Woman is much more responsible for the future than man. She represents the cradle of people who are born. It matters little that a Savoyard, Valdotain, or Valaisan man screws Negresses while running around the world. But if a woman of our place lays down with a Black, the child will be regarded as a foreigner by the tribunal of the people and immediately driven out, in one way or another. I do not invent anything. It is the most important official law for the Jewish people living today in Israel.”

“My friends and I are not racists in the aggressive sense that your legislation of the post-war period gives this word. We are merely men of the White race who have just recovered our racial consciousness and regard it as determinative of all acts of life and for the future of our offspring responsible for the rise of civilization. It is our most strict law.”

“While disappearing, we will leave a message of such importance that when it is revealed, all the idols will lose their masks, all White people will gather behind the new frontier of the race to try to survive.”

Religion

 Les Hérétiques [The Heretics], 1965:

“Christianity founded its success on the biological dregs of the Roman world, and was maintained only by appealing to the natural weakness of man, by subsituting the fallacious image of paradise for hard terrestrial realities.”

“… all the hodgepodge of Eastern thought, Judaism, Christianity, these links of the same chain which paralyzes the White man since Heracleitus. The White man is a chained giant asleep for millenia…”

“Any religion is the daughter of the race that knew it from birth.”

The Holy Grail

“For 5,000 years, and no doubt more—only a second on the scale of living things—a pitiless combat has been waged between the Jewish people and the stupid Aryans for the conquest of the world. The Jews … advance with a firm step on the road that they chose once and for all, without ever betraying their original intention, because they have Tables of the Law. The Aryans lost theirs, i.e., the Grail … which gave them their line of historical continuity: whence their chaotic gait, these contradictory actions, these hesitations to choose between the law of the spirit and that of matter, the impossibility of a true affirmation. When they crushed the Jews, barring to them the road to ‘world’ domination for several centuries, it was never in full knowledge of the cause. Simply animal instinct … The danger isolated for a while, they returned to their vomit. They lost their guide of awareness, their Grail, whereas the Jews saved theirs…”

“The Grail became a myth, starting from a living reality, according to a classic process of evolution. The Christians stole this myth from the pagans, as they stole all their sacred places by building churches on the ruins of temples. (…) it can only be a pagan and Aryan treasure. The tablets of the Grail passed through Persia. How did they arrive there, if not in the baggage of Nordic conquerors? From where did the Scythians and Medes come, if not from the plains of the Danube and the Don? And from where came the first occupants of these regions, if not the boreal kingdom, the civilization of Thule? The Grail is probably the last message sent by the Hyperboreans before their disappearance.”

“The Grail, it is the drop of pure blood which has existed in each one of us from the first ages of the world, and which each one of us more or less betrayed, by ignorance of the natural laws, irresponsibility, indifference.”

* * *

“The Grail is in you … it is the drop of primitive blood which it is necessary to save from miscegenation and then to multiply as mother. From generation to generation, by carefully contemplated unions, you will revive a creature worthy of the origins of your line. The Grail is today a scientifically founded myth.”

 Autobiographical Note

Loup was a bishop of Troyes in the fifth century, when his city was besieged by Attila. He negotiated with him so that it was saved. That was it! He accompanied the chief of the Huns back beyond the Rhine after his defeat on the Catalaunian fields in 451 as a sign of recognition of his past leniency. For this initiative, he was accused by Meroveus, chief of the Salian Franks, of collaborationism and spying for the enemy, and expelled from his bishopric in which he was so popular that it was necessary to restore it to him and later to canonize him. He became Saint Loup.

For trying to protect Europe from Russia, with Hitler, while fighting in the Legion of the French Volunteers against Bolshevism, Marc Augier was also accused by the abusive heir to Meroveus, Charles de Gaulle, of collaborationism and spying for the enemy, condemned to death, prohibited as writer with 240 fellow members, including such poor fellows as: Giono, Abel Hermant, Sacha Guitry, Montherlant. I thus had to find refuge. I found work as technical adviser of the mountain army of the Andes, then at the National Library where Saint Loup transmitted to me the pseudonym that he held since Meroveus. It is he who signed my new book Northern Face written in the Tyrol in 1942, at Leni Riefenstahl’s place. I brought back the manuscript in my rucksack, among troops of pseudo-mountaineers with the faces of murderers.
