GreatPumpkin [1]The Counter-Currents 2015 Summer Fundraiser is coming down to the wire. Since our last update [2], we have received 10 donations totaling $1,020, in amounts ranging from $10 to $500. This amount has been matched, for a total of $2,040. Our total is now $33,690.64. We are thus $6,309.36 from last year’s goal of $40,000. That seems like a lot, but a single big donation could cover it, so I am not giving up just yet. $1,032.12 now remains of the current matching grant. I want to thank all of our donors so far, and if you were waiting for the last minute: well, it is here. We will give the final tally on Monday.

Why does our Summer Fundraiser end on Halloween, rather than on the Autumnal Equinox? Aside from the pragmatic reason that Halloween gives us more time to reach our goal, Hugh MacDonald points out [3] that in Celtic pagan rites, October 31st is the end of the season of light/summer/the harvest. These Celtic rites were later fused with the rites of Roman festivals of Pomona, Lemuria, and Parentalia, and the Christian rites of the evening before All Soul’s Day to create our modern Halloween. So ending our fundraiser on Halloween is not only practical it is also traditional. We hope it is also fun.
