Verdi in the Gold Rush

Giuseppe Verdi in Golden Gate park, San Francisco

1,651 words

George Martin
Verdi at the Golden Gate: Opera and San Francisco in the Gold Rush Years
Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993

George Martin is an independent historian who has written a number of books about the history of opera (including a great biography of Verdi). His account of how opera and in particular Verdi’s operas rose to prominence in San Francisco during the Gold Rush years describes a fascinating but not widely known episode in the history of the American West.  Read more …

The Altright Corporation & the American Deep State

2,286 words

The perfect Deep State mascot: a mushroom cloud with stinging tentacles

On Monday, October 16, Jason Reza Jorjani published an explosive article, “The Coming Persian War,” on his website. It should have been front-page news the next day at The New York Times and The Washington Post, and possibly for weeks to come.

Jorjani’s article focuses on Donald Trump’s ominous Iran speech on Friday, October 13, but I want to focus on some of the truly amazing background details that Jorjani gives linking his work with the Iranian Renaissance movement and the Altright Corporation to a shadowy network of power-brokers and influence agents with connections to business, politics, and secret societies that people today loosely call the “Deep State.”  Read more …

Dems R (Also) the Real Racists

1,698 words

The American South provides all kinds of excellent demonstrations for the white liberal’s suppressed, smug, victim-blaming attitudes towards marginalized peoples for their own poor outcomes and problems. Let me be clear: I’m not talking about the idea that rural “white trash” are the one group liberals feel free to openly stereotype and scapegoat, which Jim Goad explored in his Redneck Manifesto almost 20 years ago now.

No, I’m talking about liberals literally being racist towards blacks . . . and literally being too damn stupid to even realize it.  Read more …

Mozart Won’t Make You Smart
(But Rap Will Make You Dumb)

2,340 words

After listening to Greg Johnson’s recent conversation with Rob Kievsky entitled “Leveraging Social Decline,” in particular, the part of it in which they discuss parenting, I (being a parent) felt the need to weigh in. Around the 47-minute mark, the two got into a friendly dispute over the best way to be a parent. In reality, I think both were presenting sides that seemed antithetical but really weren’t because they were each addressing different problems with their arguments.  Read more …

The Alt Knight:
A Retrospect of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns for the Current Year

3,187 words

Sometime in the near future, in an America crippled by degeneracy and stifling bureaucracy, two men of stature fight in the streets. One, an aging billionaire fed up with his society’s imminent collapse, has become a polarizing threat to the governing establishment. The other, a compromised but well-meaning foreigner wrapped in an American flag, bringing a false and used-up patriotism to a disenfranchised population.

Unintended Consequences:
How the Left Keeps Helping Us

2,054 words

Götz Kubitschek

Everything is going exactly according to plan. This is what super-villains always say, usually just before their plans are upset. (“Seize him, you fools! He’s getting away!”) So, I am may be tempting fate by saying such a thing, but actually I don’t think so. As of late it really does seem like something — Providence, the Invisible Hand, the Cunning of Reason, or what have you — has been at work behind the scenes, helping our cause. In truth, we don’t have a plan, but events are unfolding as if someone does, and as if that someone is smiling upon us (perhaps from atop his perch in Asgard).  Read more …

Rashomon & Realism

3,476 words

Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon (1950) is commonly found on lists of the world’s greatest movies, and deservedly so. Rashomon features avant-garde narrative techniques (flashbacks, multiple points of view), dynamic black-and-white cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa, compelling Ravel-like music by Fumio Hayasaka, subtle and intensely dramatic performances, and a complex but tightly edited script, all combined into a fast-paced 88-minute masterpiece with an emotionally devastating climax.
