In 1941, Jewish-American businessman Theodore Kaufman wrote Germany Must Perish! This 96-page booklet advocated for “the extinction of the German nation and the total eradication from the earth of all her people’ via forced sterilization.” Fun fact: Between the pages of Germany Must Perish! and Mein Kampf, one can find an open call to annihilate an entire race of people only in the former. A tempest in a teapot started brewing nearly two years ago at Vermont’s Middlebury College which perfectly exemplifies the weak tea that the conservative movement has been serving these past several decades. College President Laurie Patton effected a clandestine name change of a century-old building on campus. Mead Memorial Chapel was to be renamed (or “de-named”) Middlebury Chapel. The chapel’s name had originally honored John A. Mead, a physician who served as Vermont’s Governor from 1910 to 1912. Both an alumnus and trustee of the college, Mead had contributed most of the money for the chapel’s construction in 1916. (more…)

One of our readers has asked my opinion of Charles Murray’s new book Facing Reality: Two Truths about Race in America (New York: Encounter Books, 2021). I breezed through the ebook version of Facing Reality in just a few hours. I think that this book’s publication is an encouraging sign, and I hope that it will be widely read. America has long denied fundamental truths about race, but in the past year, the costs of these lies have become unbearable. If I had to choose one word to identify the uniqueness of the West it would be “Faustian.” This is the word Oswald Spengler used to designate the “soul” of the West. He believed that Western civilization was driven by an unusually dynamic and expansive psyche. The “prime-symbol” of this Faustian soul was “pure and limitless space.” This soul had a “tendency towards the infinite,” a tendency most acutely expressed in modern mathematics. (more…)
