L’Ouragan Katrina :
Le signe avant-coureur de la fin

2,253 words

Read more …

Read more …

Le retour de l’eugénisme

Helmuth Nyborg

1,224 words

Patrick MacDowell, “Europe,” Albert Memorial, Kensington Gardens

1,582 words

English original here

Read more …

El Guerrero y la Ciudad

742 words

English version here

Lincoln

3,145 words

Lincoln is essentially Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter with bigger words. The latter said the Confederacy was the product of blood sucking monsters to be destroyed with stakes to the heart and decapitation. The former tells us Southerners simply exist to be killed with bayonet and cannonade. Far from being the “moral relativists” of conservative imagination, Hollywood has given us a version of American history characterized by absolute portrayals of good and evil, with shades of gray permitted to righteous egalitarians only divided by what tactics can best be used to exterminate their foes.  Read more …

Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2

596 words

Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is the fifth and final movie of Mormon novelist Stephenie Meyer’s phenomenally popular Twilight Saga. I think that the Twilight Saga is highly significant, because it offers a systematic argument for traditional — and biological — sexual roles and morality in the form of a Gothic teen romance story involving vampires and werewolves. (I best summarize my take on the Twilight Saga in my review of Breaking Dawn, Part 1.) I also found the movies highly entertaining.

Breaking Dawn, Part 2, however, is a major disappointment. Read more …

The Politics of Nuclear War, Part 1

Graphic by Harold Arthur McNeill

3,525 words

Part 1 of 3

Portuguese translation here

Introduction

Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It merited little more than a passing mention in the mainstream media, despite the fact of having been the most dramatic and iconic moment in the half-century Cold War, a conflict which had stakes higher than any other in history and which continues to haunt our current political landscape.

Tragedy Has Obligations

Graphic by Harold Arthur McNeill

French translation here

Editor’s Note:

In the 1920s and ’30s, Robinson Jeffers was one of America’s most esteemed and critically acclaimed poets. However, in 1948, his public and critical reputation entered a steep and irreversible decline upon the publication of The Double Axe and Other Poems (New York: Random House, 1948), which contains a number of poems about the Second World War and its aftermath that were strongly critical of the Allies and clearly sympathetic to the defeated Axis powers.
