Hermann Keyserling’s America

220px-Ikeysel001p12,279 words

A half-forgotten German philosopher’s profound analysis of the United States

When the German philosopher Count Hermann Keyserling, the centennial of whose birth was celebrated last year by a very small but dedicated band of followers, made a four-month lecture tour of the United States in 1928, it was his second visit to the country. Read more …

Before & After the Camp of the Saints:
The Untranslated Writings of Jean Raspail

jean-raspail4,218 words

It is rather more pathetic than contemptible, the desperate struggle of William Buckley’s National Review coterie of tame Tories to win acceptance by the Establishment as “responsible” conservatives. In the magazine’s endorsement of George Ball’s (incorrectly identified as George Will’s) proposal to “send an armada of rescue boats” to save the Southeast Asian refugees, Ball is quoted as asking:

Unfortunately, at least within the Western democracies, the rewards and the constraints have been such as to drive creative intellects from the military ranks at Mach 1 speed. Nevertheless, occasional bright intellectual lights have remained in uniform, despite all the obstacles. By far the brightest such light (a veritable supernova) was Major General John Frederick Charles Fuller. Read more …

Cat Lady Logic

May 23, 2011

Obama’s speech in El Paso a few weeks ago began with a feel-good story about a graduation ceremony in Miami in which over 180 flags were marched across the stage – one for every nation that at least one student in the graduating class had invaded from. As each flag crossed the podium, that nation’s invaders cheered. “But then, the last flag, the American flag, came into view, and everyone in the room erupted in applause. Everybody cheered.”

The Hell Soldiers

4,660 words

federal-siege-guns-yorktown-virginia-during-the-american-civil-war-mathew-bradyThe bend in the river was leafy and green with old trees that hung their thick branches out and over. The shadows were almost black at some parts on the banks, spreading gradually to grey green, then dappling away into nothing by the middle of the water. The sunlight sparkled gold and white on the dark waters. Read more …

Freedom, Determinism, & Destiny

Isis as Agathe Tyche and Osiris as Agathos Daimon in serpent form

Having free will means having real options to choose from. No matter what option one may choose, one could have chosen otherwise. Determinism means that we do not have real options. When one chooses, one could not have chosen otherwise.

Even if one has free will, not every choice is free. If we choose merely on the basis of feeling and impulse, is that really freedom, if such motives are largely determined by social factors? Read more …

Ayn Rand, Before Capitalism

YoungRandEditor’s Note:

This essay was written in 2000 and published online at a long-defunct website. It contains some good ideas and good writing, so I believe it deserves to live again.

“The capitalistic world is low, unprincipled and corrupt.”
